Free citation check
Check a case citation: is it held, is it cited, or is it found nowhere?
Type one citation. Pundora looks for it in the 18 million judgments it holds and tells you what it found, in plain words. No sign-in, no AI, and what you type is not kept.
What the answers mean
| Answer | What Pundora found |
|---|---|
| Held | A judgment is held under that citation. You see its parties, court, date and the citations Pundora holds for it. This confirms the citation exists, not what the judgment holds. |
| Judgment found by its name | Pundora does not hold that reporter's citation (it holds the courts' own reports and neutral citations), but the citation is written in judgments it holds, and a judgment between the parties most often named beside it is held. |
| Cited in judgments Pundora holds | Not held under that citation, but other judgments use it. A citation other courts write is unlikely to be invented; find the judgment by its parties and read it. |
| Not confirmed | Held nowhere and written nowhere in the judgments Pundora holds. That is a statement about those judgments, not a finding that the judgment does not exist. |
Why this exists
On 2 July 2026 the Supreme Court held, in Pooja Ramesh Singh v. Jammu & Kashmir Bank Ltd, 2026 INSC 668, that citing a judgment without verifying it is misconduct on the part of an advocate. An invented citation has one tell that no amount of plausible wording hides: it is held nowhere, and no other judgment cites it. This page checks exactly that, for one citation, for nothing. The register lists every Indian order on the subject.
What it does not do
- It does not read the judgment for you. A real citation can be cited for a proposition the judgment never laid down. Open the judgment and read the passage you rely on.
- It does not say a judgment does not exist. Tribunals, district courts and the newest volumes of private reporters are not held; a real authority can come back "not confirmed".
- It checks one citation at a time, not a draft. Inside Pundora a whole draft is checked at once: every citation, every quoted passage against the judgment's text, every cited section against the Act (how that works).
- It does not search by parties' names alone. Type a citation.
What happens to what you type
The citation is sent to Pundora's server in India, looked up in Pundora's own judgments, and answered. It is not stored, not sent to any AI and not sent to any other company. To keep the service fair the server counts checks per connection per hour, using a scrambled form of the network address that changes daily and cannot be turned back into the address; those counts are deleted after two days. There is a limit of thirty checks an hour.
Questions advocates ask
How can I check whether a case citation is real?
Find the judgment under that citation in a source that holds its text, and read it. This page does the first step free: it tells you whether Pundora holds a judgment under the citation and whether any of 18 million judgments cites it. A citation held nowhere and cited nowhere deserves suspicion before it goes into a filing.
Does this use AI?
No. It is a lookup by code in Pundora's own judgments. Nothing you type is sent to an AI or to any other company, and it is not stored.
Why does a famous SCC citation come back as "found by its name" rather than "held"?
Pundora holds the courts' own published judgments with their neutral citations and Supreme Court Reports citations. A private reporter's citation, such as SCC, is not in the courts' own files; Pundora finds it because other judgments write it, with the case's name beside it, and then finds the judgment by that name.
What does "not confirmed" mean?
That no judgment is held under the citation and no judgment Pundora holds cites it. It is a statement about Pundora's judgments, not a finding that the judgment does not exist: tribunals, district courts and the newest private-reporter volumes are not held.
Is there a limit?
Thirty checks an hour per connection. Inside Pundora, a whole draft is checked at once.
