Legal research databases and AI tools in India, compared on their own published facts

By Abhijeet, founder, Pundora · Published 3 October 2026

An advocate choosing a research tool is offered a great many adjectives and very few numbers. This page sets out what each vendor publishes about itself, in its own words, with the page each fact came from. Nothing here is ranked, and where a vendor's pages are silent the entry says "not stated".

Ranges are the lowest and highest plan with a published rupee price on the pages read; taxes are as each vendor states them (several pages say prices exclude 18% GST, several do not say). Open each entry for every plan and its source.

What the pages do and do not say about checking citations

Where a vendor describes how a citation in an AI answer is verified, the description is a link from the citation to the document it holds, so that the reader can open and check it. On the pages read, none describes checking the quoted words of an answer against the judgment's text, and none publishes the method behind an accuracy figure. That is the gap the Stanford study of the leading United States tools measured in 2025, where products marketed as avoiding hallucination were found to err on between 17 and 33 per cent of test questions. It is the reason this page quotes each vendor's claim rather than repeating it as a fact.

Pundora, by the same test

Its limits, first
Early access, by invitation from a waitlist; a small number of chambers. No tribunals, no district-court orders, no journals or commentary, no editorial headnotes, and no flag for a judgment that has been overruled or distinguished. Word export follows the Delhi High Court's format only. Not certified (no ISO or SOC audit). A company incorporated in September 2026.
What it is
A case-file assistant for Indian litigation: chronology, deadlines and calendar from an uploaded file; research answers from the judgments it holds; first drafts in the chamber's own format; a citation check on any draft; the previous evening's digest on WhatsApp.
What it holds
More than 18 million judgments of every Indian High Court and the Supreme Court, 1950 to today, with full text, loaded from the courts' own open archives; central acts section by section from India Code; court-holiday calendars for 27 courts.
Published prices
Free in early access; what will be charged later is not decided (pricing). Exports are free for ever.
What it says about accuracy
It does not claim to be free of error. It says a citation shown is read off a judgment it holds or a licensed source confirms, and that a quotation shown has been found in the judgment's text word for word.
How citations are checked
By code: the citation is looked for in the corpus and the licensed sources; quoted words are looked for in the judgment's text; a cited section's words are set beside the draft's sentence. When nothing is found the report says "not confirmed", never "does not exist". It does not catch a judgment cited for the opposite of what it holds. The method, in full.
Where data is kept
Servers in India (Mumbai region); each chamber's workspace walled off in the database; files encrypted with the workspace's own key. When an AI feature runs, the relevant text goes to the AI provider, which does not train on it and deletes it within 30 days under its standard terms; zero-retention terms are applied for, not yet in force. Security.
Operated by
Pundora Legaltech Private Limited, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi; CIN U74900DL2026PTC470096.

Choosing, honestly

Questions advocates ask

How much does Manupatra cost?

Manupatra's own subscription-plans page, read on 3 October 2026, lists plans from ₹14,250 to ₹55,460 a year, with AI credits sold separately; the page and its FAQ differ on whether taxes are included. Each plan and the page it came from are in its entry above.

How much does SCC Online cost?

The published prices read on 3 October 2026 are ₹33,500 or ₹49,500 a year for the Web Edition and ₹51,500 to ₹67,500 per user a year with the AI Pro module, depending on the edition and whether the AI Pro module is added; the AI Pro prices are stated as exclusive of 18% GST. See its entry for each plan and source.

Is there a free alternative to Manupatra or SCC Online?

Indian Kanoon's search and reading are free, with paid plans for its research tools. Pundora is free in early access, by invitation, and holds judgments of the High Courts and the Supreme Court; it does not hold tribunals, journals or commentary, which the paid databases do.

Which legal AI tool in India checks citations?

On the vendors' own pages read on 3 October 2026, citation checking is described as a link from the citation to the held document. None describes checking quoted words against the judgment's text. Pundora's check does that by code and says "not confirmed" when nothing is found; it does not claim to be free of error.

Which tools say they store data in India?

On the pages read: Nowlez, JuniorLawyer ("primarily") and Lexlegis state India storage; Indian Kanoon and LegitQuest say data may be stored outside India; the others' pages did not state a location. Pundora stores workspaces in India and names what leaves India in its privacy policy.
